In November of 2019, my wife, Norma, and I went to Africa, where I was invited to lecture on changing patterns in contemporary church music and worship. Our itinerary included many sight-seeing adventures, which we greatly anticipated. We had no further plans until God, in His wisdom, altered them.
Departing from Toronto, Canada, we stopped in Spain and Germany before arriving in Africa, where we visited South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Zambia. Most of our time was divided between two academic institutions – University of Nairobi in Kenya and Rusangu University in Zambia. While there, I gave lectures, answered questions, and fellowshipped with student and faculty. We enjoyed our time there. It was a wonderfully rewarding and transformative experience.
The focus of our travel changed during an outing in Kenya. While in Mombasa, a city in Kenya, we met a large family of sixteen living in deplorable conditions. They lacked proper shelter and clothing to shield from the elements, as well as sufficient food. The situation was shocking and heartbreaking. How does one see this, sympathize, and then walk away to enjoy oneself? We could not in good conscience. We felt prayer and well wishes alone were not enough. We wanted to do more and this desire, urged by the Holy Spirit, extended our focus from music and exploration to helping those in need.
Today we continue working to assist this family by building a home and providing beds, food, and clothing. The various images on this website demonstrate how the family once lived, and what is being done now to aid them. As time goes on, we will continue to provide updates on this project, and on others as they arise, so you can follow how your donations are being used. Please visit this page for ongoing details.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who donates to worthy cause. Thank you for your generosity and kindness. We welcome everyone who wishes to lend their support, not only to this family, but also to other charitable endeavours in Africa.
Above all, we thank our Lord, Jesus Christ, for leading us to this precious family. We praise Him for the opportunity to bless them, and for reminding us of our utmost duty to serve. May we be His instruments of hope to the suffering, ever the faithful means by which He works His mission of love.
I have shown you in every way, by labouring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ (Acts 20:35)
Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’ (Matthew 25:37-40)
